The El Tucuche Epic 1984-2007 - Special Edition
In 1965, Eye had my first One-Man exhibition of paintings and drawings in Port of Spain, called LABOR OF LOVE. Racing to my home in Brooklyn, N.Y., to my first wife Vera and my first born, son Kappel, a minute before midnight on old year's eve of 1970, Eye lifted her high over my head and declared that Eye was going to paint and write, for the rest of my life, the journey of African man's climb from under his feet, in defeat, up steps of regaining grace to his head in the skies of his sovereignty - El Tucuche! El Tucuche, the second-highest mountain peak in Trinidad and Tobago, represents the soaring consciousness of man's spiritual height. Aripo, the highest, is symbolic of the Godhead.
What has now taken on epic proportions is an idea executed in an extensive series of paintings, drawings, essays and poetry. DE DISTANCE IS HERE (1984–2007) is a poem divided into six Shelves or Bands of Grace. Somewhat of an epic in that the length of the poem and its narrative style describing an adventure of Spirit in the throes of Becoming. Mine is overtaken by testimony that strongly leans to an organic play of passions between the elusive boundaries of permanence and impermanence.
